Box Score In a match that featured two 6-0 teams ranked in the top-15 nationally, the 14th-ranked Denison women's soccer team handed No. 10 Centre its first loss of the season following a 2-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at Hillside Field in Danville, Ky.
In a game where shots on goal were at a premium, the Big Red took full advantage of their attempts on frame. Just 22 seconds into the match, the Colonels' Katie Downing ripped a shot that was corralled by sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Herold. That shot proved to be the only one that ended up on frame for Centre all afternoon.
In the 17th minute, sophomore Meg Wozniak and freshman Maggie Armstrong showed how quick strike the Denison offense could be with goals just 10 seconds apart. Wozniak broke the scoreless tie with the Big Red's first shot of the game. The sophomore netted her third goal of the season at 16:11 after Centre was whistled for a foul.
Exactly 10 seconds after the go-ahead goal, Armstrong found the back of the net to extend DU's lead to 2-0. The goal was her fifth of the season and her third in her last two games. Those back-to-back goals were the fastest two goals scored by the Big Red since Maria Robert and Anne Young scored 30 seconds apart in an 8-0 victory over Hiram on Nov. 1, 2003.
Over the course of the final 73 minutes, the two teams combined for 19 shots. Both defenses did a solid job of protecting their goalies as none of those attempts were put on goal. The Big Red also did a good job defending against the Colonels' eight corner kicks.
Centre held a 13-11 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners. Denison was whistled for nine fouls, including two yellow cards, while the Colonels were guilty of seven infractions.
Wozniak and senior Andrea Witte paced the DU offense with three shots each, while junior Ashlyn Flaherty had two attempts. Herold finished one save en route to her fifth shutout this season. Herold and the Big Red defense have allowed just one goal in the last six games.
Destinie Graves finished the day with a match-best five shots, while Downing had three attempts. Starter Olivia Alford took the loss after surrendering two goals in 23 minutes. Holly Hilton closed out the final 67 minutes of the match in goal.
With the win, Denison improves to 7-0 for the first time since 2006, while Centre falls to 6-1 on the season. The Big Red will conclude its stretch of three-straight road games on Tuesday (Sept. 22) when they travel to Capital for a 7 p.m. match.
