Box Score The Denison defense's scoreless streak may have ended at Ohio Northern on Wednesday, but the most important streak lives on following No. 14 Denison's 4-1 victory over the Polar Bears. The victory moves Denison's record to a perfect 6-0.
Denison's set piece execution was firing on all cylinders as two goals would come via corner kicks and one off a free kick from long range.
The Big Red broke the scoreless tie in the 15th minute when Andrea Witte sent a corner kick to the head of Maggie Armstrong who knocked it in over the top of ONU goalkeeper Emily Brodict.
Ten minutes later, a foul on Ohio Northern would result in a free kick for Denison. Ashlyn Flaherty would put a boot on the ball from roughly 25 yards out and it would sail into the upper 90 for the second goal of the match. The goal was Flaherty's first of the season.
DU would come out in the second half and take a commanding 3-0 lead when Witte found Armstrong once again on a corner kick. The goal came just 1:52 into the second half. It is the fourth goal of the season for Armstrong and the fourth assist for Witte.
In the 75th minute, Ohio Northern would score the first goal against the Denison defense since the first match of the year on Sept. 2. The goal snapped a 461 minute shutout streak. ONU's Hannah Reich was the culprit when she scored off a short pass from Shelby Stephens off a free kick from just inside the 18-yard box.
In the 81st minute Witte would notch her first goal of the season and the 15th goal of her career when she put home a first touch via a cross from Naomi Barker.
Jenny Herold posted six saves for Denison while Brodict finished with four saves for the Polar Bears. Denison edged Ohio Northern 17-15 in shots while ONU won the corner kick battle, 7-6.
The victory sets up a clash of two nationally ranked teams on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Danville, Ky. The 14th ranked Big Red will take on No. 10 Centre at 1 p.m. The Colonels are also off to a 6-0 start to the season.
