The Denison men's tennis team opened the 2015-16 season with an 8-1 victory over Capital on Wednesday afternoon in Granville.
The Big Red jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead with a sweep in doubles play. The freshman duo of John Armstrong and Colin Bahin scored the first point of the match with an 8-3 decision over Beau Streety and Jared Judson at the third flight. Denison grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to another young pairing. Sophomore Jack O'Koniewski and freshman Blake Burstein doubled up Jesse Faulkner and Dale Booher, 8-4, at second doubles. At No. 1 doubles, senior Jackson O'Gorman-Bean and freshman Kevin Brown picked up an 8-4 victory over Luke Buchanan and C.J. Martin to complete the sweep.
In singles action, DU won flights two through six to secure the match. O'Koniewski was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Martin at the second flight, while Jamie McDonald did not surrender a game to Booher at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0). Brown won via matching 6-1 scores over Judson at fourth singles, while Burstein defeated Streety 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 flight. In sixth singles, Bahin took down Gian Carlo DiMichaelangelo 6-3, 6-0.
With the win, the Big Red improves to 1-0, while the loss drops Capital to 1-1. Denison will return to action this weekend when they travel to Oberlin for the Oberlin Invitational.
