OT goal powers Denison past Cards

Box Score

After over 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, Denison junior forward Jacquie Graham netted the game-winning goal in the 95th minute to give the Big Red a 1-0 victory over regional rival Otterbein on Wednesday in Westerville.

In the opening period, Denison held a slim 7-6 edge in shots with both teams firing three shots on net. Two of sophomore goalie Jenny Herold's three saves came in the opening 11 minutes. No save was bigger than her stop in the 11th minute of the match. Following an unlucky hand ball in the box, Otterbein's Megan McCabe stepped up to the penalty spot looking to grab the early lead for her squad. However, that plan would not come to fruition as Herold made a great play on the attempt and kept the Cardinals off the board.

The Big Red also had a one-shot advantage in the second half, but Denison's accuracy was just a bit better than their opponents. DU put 67 percent of their attempts on frame, while Otterbein landed just 38 percent of their shots on goal. Never the less, the score remained tied at the end of regulation.

In the extra session, junior Ashlyn Flaherty won a key possession battle midway through the period that set the table for the game-winning score. Sophomore Meg Wozniak gained possession of the ball and sent a beautiful cross towards the goal that was tapped inside the far post by Graham. The junior's second goal of the season brought the match to an end at 94:35.

Wozniak finished with a match-high five shots to go along with her assist, while Flaherty and Andrea Witte had four and three attempts, respectively. Herold finished with six saves en route to her third-consecutive shutout this season. The Denison defense has gone 296:33 without allowing a goal.

Polly Sellers paced the Cards with four shots, while Erica Meier and Hayley Hotchkiss each attempted three. Goalie Dana Strimbu made nine saves and surrendered just one goal in almost 95 minutes of action.

The win moves the Big Red to 4-0 on the season, while Otterbein falls to 0-3 with the loss. Denison returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 13) when they host Baldwin Wallace for a 1 p.m. match.
