Easter Sunday doubleheader ends in split for Denison

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison and DePauw split a doubleheader for the second-straight day as the Big Red took game one, 8-6 and fell in game two, 10-9.  Denison is 9-9 and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference west division.

In game one, DU got things going with a five-run second inning fueled by two DePauw errors with two outs in the inning.  Eric Zmuda drove in the first run with an infield single. Georgie Montes reached on an error, scoring Tanner Johnson and Evan Flax singled in two runs with a base hit to right field.

In the fourth, Denison would tack on two more runs thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Flax and Ryan Mulligan.  In DePauw's half of the fifth, Cory Meixner hit a pinch hit home run over the wall in left field.  Lucas Italiano would follow with a two-run homer to right, trimming DU's lead to 8-6.  In the sixth, Mulligan would come on to pitch the final two innings.  He would face seven batters, allowing only two hits while striking out two to earn his third save of the season.

Johnny Funkhouser earned the win to improve to 3-0.  Flax was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Charlie Apfelbach also went 2-for-3 with a walk and one run scored.

Game two saw the Big Red load the bases with two outs in the ninth inning only to be turned away by Tiger reliever Nick Horvath. After Lascelles Lagares drew a walk with two outs, Montes would reach base on an error by the third baseman, loading the bases and putting the go-ahead run at second base.  Horvath would win the dual with Denison's Flax, striking out one of the Big Red's hottest hitters to earn the four-game split.

Denison tied the game at 9-9 thanks to a two-run single to right by Apfelbach in the eighth inning.  DePauw answered with the eventual game-winning RBI by Meixner in the bottom half of the inning off DU reliever Perley Provost.

Apfelbach led Denison offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.  Sam Frazen hit his second home run of the weekend in the seventh inning and Flax posted his eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 with a walk, a double and one run scored.

Kyle Colgain got the start and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs, four of which were earned.  He gave up seven hits and walked four.  Horvath earned the win in relief for DePauw as he worked the final 1.1 innings, striking out three while allowing two hits and one walk.

Denison will return to action on Tuesday with a single nine inning game at Capital University at 4:30 p.m.
