Box Score 2 The Denison baseball team completed the four-game sweep of Wabash on Monday with a pair of victories in their final North Coast Athletic Conference West Division games of the season. The Big Red opened the day with a 7-5 victory before capping off the series with a 15-4 win.
Sophomore Eric Zmuda's hot bat carried over into the third game of the series as he drove in a pair with a double to right center in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Flax followed with a ground ball to third that allowed senior Georgie Montes to score from 90 feet away.
Each team pushed across a run in the second to move the score to 4-1 in favor of the home team. The Little Giants would go on to tie the game at 4-4 thanks to a solo run in the third and two more in the fourth frame.
In the fifth inning, the Big Red plated three runs on the strength of three hits to gain a 7-4 advantage. Montes delivered the big hit of the inning when he knocked in Ryan Mulligan and Jack Blanchard with a triple to left center. The senior would come around to score on a two-out wild pitch by reliever Bryan Roberts.
The score remained 7-4 until the seventh when Wabash scored a run off relief pitcher Perley Provost. Matt Spaulding scored the run on a sacrifice fly in foul territory to Montes in left. After the run crossed the dish, Big Red skipper Mike Deegan made a call to the bullpen that brought in sophomore Connor Hanrahan. After allowing a base hit up the middle, Hanrahan responded with back-to-back strikeouts to lock up his second save of the season.
Blanchard, Mulligan and Montes combined to go 8-for-9 with six runs and three RBIs. Sophomore Tanner Johnson also logged a pair of hits. In addition to his offensive production, Mulligan also earned his second win of the season after allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work. Hanrahan struck out two of the three batters he faced en route to earning the save in 0.2 innings out of the pen.
David Oliger, Tyler Owensby and Matt Spaulding all registered two hits in the opener, while Tanner Watson drove in a pair. Andrew Rodgers and Spaulding both touched the plate on two separate occasions. Little Giant starter Austin Hawn took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
The Denison bats came alive in the nightcap as Denison scored 15 times on 16 hits. The Big Red jumped out to an early 10-0 lead through the first three innings after scoring four times in the first and adding three more runs in both the second and third innings. Wabash shrunk the deficit to six with two runs in the fourth and solo tallies in the fifth and sixth. However, a five-run seventh by DU locked up the 11-run victory.
Charlie Apfelbach and Blanchard both went 3-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBIs, while Zmuda knocked in four and scored another with three hits. Montes finished with three RBIs, while Mulligan, Zac Lewinski and Nick Marsit each scored twice. Marsit and Lascelles Lagares also recorded a pair of hits.
Sophomore Johnny Funkhouser picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season after giving up four runs on 10 hits in six inning of work. Senior Kyle Colgain surrendered just one hit and struck out two in two innings of relief, while junior Adam Goldstein retired the side in order in the ninth with two Ks.
Wabash's Clint Scarborough went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run in game two, while Christian Vukas drove in a pair. Lucas Stippler and Austin Ellingwood also recorded two hits each. Starter Michael Herrmann took the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Denison improves to 17-16 overall and 10-6 in NCAC West play, while the Little Giants fall to 12-23 and 4-12 in the division. The Big Red play their final home game of the season on Wednesday when they host No. 6 Heidelberg on Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
