Box Score Ohio Wesleyan's Luke Leyden scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds left in overtime as the Battling Bishops held off the Denison Big Red, 9-8 in the championship of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament from Delaware, Ohio.
With Denison trailing 8-7 with just over one minute to play in regulation, Ohio Wesleyan's Jordan Carlson was flagged for a one minute penalty, allowing the Big Red to play its most critical possession of the game in man-up.
With 32 seconds left, James Meager took a pass from Blair Farinholt and scored, tying the game at 8-8. The ensuing faceoff would be a scrum between two of the best FOGO's in the country in Denison's Eric Baumgardner and OWU's Sam Gioseffi. The two locked horns for over 15 seconds until the ball popped out and was awarded to the Big Red on a violation. Denison called a time out with 10 seconds to play to draw up a final attempt. With three seconds remaining, Farinholt got a great look but Ryan McMahon was there for the save.
In overtime, OWU gained possession first and after a Marcus Dietz shot was blocked. It looked as if the Bishops scored the winning goal, however it was waived off due to a crease violation and the ball was given back to Denison with 2:12 to play. Denison would come out of a timeout with two straight shots by Liam Rooney. The first hit the pipe and the second was saved by McMahon. At the other end, DU would survive three-straight shots from the Bishops. On the final shot by Kyle Foster, Bullington made the save but after his save, Denison's outlet pass was intercepted by Leyden who caught the ball in stride and made about four steps toward Bullington, scoring at point blank range.
With the win, Ohio Wesleyan improves to 16-0 and will receive the NCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Big Red falls to 13-4 and will hope for a potential at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. That won't be learned until the selections are revealed next Sunday, May 3.
Denison was led offensively by Farinholt who finished with three goals and three assists. Will Donohue scored two goals and added one assist while Meager posted a pair of goals. Jamie McCahan scored the game's first goal and Rooney contributed one assist. Baumgardner won 13-of-21 faceoffs and finished with four ground balls. Ben Duhoski led the way with five ground balls.
OWU got two goals from Brendan Bouchard and two goals and one helper from Foster. Ryan McMahon posted 10 saves while Bullington added seven for Denison.
The Big Red held a 36-29 advantage in the shot department and committed three penalties for 2:30 while Ohio Wesleyan was flagged four times resulting in 3:30 of extra-man offense for Denison.
