DU blanks Ohio Wesleyan, advances to NCAC Semifinal

The Denison women's tennis team secured a berth in the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals with a 5-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at the VandenBerg Courts in Gambier, Ohio.

The Big Red cruised to a doubles sweep as they outscored the Battling Bishops 24-6 in the three flights. Senior Heather Abzug and junior Emily Holloway opened the match with their 11th victory of the season, defeating Megan Ryan and Kimberly Baione 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. The junior tandem of Taylor Hawkins and Meg Chiumento doubled the Denison lead with an 8-1 victory over Adrienne D'Alewyn and Brooke Butterworth at the top flight. Junior Sarah Torrence and freshman Courtney Brown completed the sweep with an 8-3 decision over Alex Webb and Whitney Lonnemann at second doubles.

In singles play, Brown put DU one point away from a victory with a straight-set win (6-0, 6-1) over Butterworth at No. 2. The freshman is now 12-5 at second singles. Chiumento brought the match to an end at third singles with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Webb. The win marked her team-leading seventh straight and 13th overall at the flight.

Denison improves to 14-7 on the year, while the Bishops fall to 9-13 overall. The Big Red will look to avenge a 5-4 loss from earlier this season when they take on Oberlin, who shutout Wooster 5-0, in the tournament semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Ohio Wesleyan will take on Allegheny in the fifth-place match at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
