The Denison men's tennis team earned a spot in the semifinals of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-1 win over Allegheny on Friday at the VandenBerg Courts in Gambier, Ohio.
With the victory, DU secured a rematch with NCAC West foe DePauw, who blanked Wooster 5-0 in the quarterfinal round. Denison's last loss came at the hands of the Tigers, who edged the Big Red 5-4 in Granville on April 12.
The Gators drew first blood with an 8-6 decision at third doubles. However, Denison rattled off five-straight points to secure the match victory. Seniors Jeffrey LoDuca and Casey Cempre evened the match with an 8-5 win over Alexander Hurtuk and Sam Stephenson at No. 2 doubles. The tandem improved to 11-1 since becoming a team and notched their fifth-straight win of the season.
Grant Veltman and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean broke the tie at the top flight with an 8-6 victory over Thomas Manning and Tyler Triolo. The win was their third straight and eighth overall as a team. The No. 1 doubles win also gave Denison a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
Freshman Jamie McDonald extended the Big Red lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jai Redkar at No. 6 singles. McDonald picked up his fourth-straight win and improved to 3-0 at the flight. Veltman earned his 10th win at the top singles flight following a straight-set decision (6-3, 6-1) over Triolo. DU secured its place in the semifinal round when Jack O'Koniewski knocked off Daniel Conroy (6-0, 7-5).
Denison improves to 11-9, while the Gators fall to 11-9. The NCAC West rematch between DU and DePauw is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
