Jackets take two from Big Red

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison hosted Baldwin Wallace on Thursday night at Big Red Field and dropped a pair of games to the 15th ranked Yellow Jackets, falling 5-1 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

In the opener, BW took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single by Hunter Handel.  Denison starter Ian Barry would go on to pitch three innings, allowing one run off five hits.

The breakthrough for the Yellow Jackets would come in the fourth inning.  Denison reliever Zack Davis would get two quick outs after allowing a leadoff single to Handel.  An RBI double by Jerry Scholle to left would score Handel.  John Taylor would follow with a bunt base hit to third that put two on for Cole Nieto who cleared them with a triple to centerfield.  In all, four runs would cross the plate for BW, all with two outs, allowing them to take a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth a double to the gap in right center by Jack Blanchard would score Nick Marsit but that would be all the offense Denison could muster in game one.

Barry took the loss while Baldwin Wallace starter Logan Heffernan went the distance, allowing six hits and one run in seven innings pitched.

In the nightcap, BW would utilize another four-run fourth inning to pull away.  With Denison trailing 2-1, the Yellow Jackets would load the bases with a single and two walks.  Adam Goldstein would be called into the game with the bases loaded and no outs.  He got Eric Murphy to pop out to second base, but would hit Jerry Sholle with a pitch, allowing Kyle Chontos to score.  Zach Ferster would follow with a sacrifice fly to center then an error would allow Alex Marcum to reach base, scoring Handel.  Alex Green would cap off the rally with an RBI single to left.

Three of the four runs were charged to Matthew Zmuda who started the inning on the mound for Denison. He would be saddled with the loss.  Goldstein pitched two innings and did not allow an earned run while giving up only one hit.  He faced 10 batters and threw only 23 pitches.

Eric Zmuda was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.  Charlie Apfelbach also was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.  Tucker Davison provided Denison's first run of the game with a double to left-center, scoring Eric Zmuda.

BW reliever Alex Albright got the win and improves to 5-1 on the season after pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starter Cory Waite.

Denison falls to 13-16 on the season while Baldwin Wallace improves to 24-8.  The Big Red will now prepare for a critical four-game series with Wabash College that begins on Saturday, April 23 at noon and continues on Sunday, April 24 with a doubleheader that also starts at noon.
