Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison picked up a win over the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division leader Ohio Wesleyan in game one, 5-2, but dropped the nightcap of the doubleheader, 14-6, on Tuesday in Delaware, Ohio.

In the opener, the Big Red scored five unanswered runs, including four in the fifth, to earn the victory. After giving up solo runs in the second and third, Denison cut the deficit in half in the fourth when senior Nick Marsit singled in Evan Flax, who reached base with a leadoff walk.

After shutting out the Battling Bishops in the bottom of the fourth, DU erupted for four runs in the fifth behind three hits and a costly error that resulted in three unearned runs. Freshman Tanner Johnson got things going with a one-out double to left center. After stealing third, Johnson scored on a ground ball to second by Flax. Flax reached base safely on the play after first baseman J.J. Buckey muffed a throw from Colin Stolly. With two outs, Flax was able to steal second and move another 90 feet on a wild pitch by Brett Kiser. After Charlie Apfelbach drew a walk and stole second to get into scoring position, sophomore Tucker Davison ripped a single up the middle that scored both runners and gave Denison its first lead of the game at 4-2. After swiping second, Davision came around to score on a double to left by freshman Sam Frazen. Starting pitcher Ryan Mulligan and relievers Perley Provost and Zack Huarte combined for three scoreless innings to preserve the lead.

Mulligan picked up his first win of the year after allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Provost surrendered one hit and fanned two in the sixth, while Huarte retired the side in order en route to his first save of the season.

Johnson and Frazen each logged a double, while Davison drove in a pair and scored another run. Flax scored two of the team's five runs. Johnson swiped his team-leading 13th base, while Apfelbach stole his seventh bag. Flax and Davison each took a base.

In game two, Ohio Wesleyan padded a two-run lead with seven runs on seven hits in the eighth inning. After falling behind 2-0, the Big Red took a one-run lead with three runs in the second. Senior catcher Zac Lewinski knocked in the first run with a double to left that scored classmate Lascelles Lagares. With runners at the corners, Johnson dropped a single into center that scored Lewinski from third. Flax followed with a ground out to short that allowed Jack Blanchard to score from third.

The Bishops regained the lead with two more runs in the bottom of second. The third lead change of the game came in the top of the sixth when DU plated two on four hits and one OWU miscue. Blanchard knocked in the first run with a base hit to center that scored Lewinski, who led the inning off with a double to right center. Blanchard represented the second run of the game thanks to a base hit to right by Mulligan.

The final lead change came in the bottom of the inning when the Bishops scored three times on four hits and one Denison error. The home team put the game away in the eighth with a 7-run, 7-hit performance off relief pitcher Kyle Colgain. Starting pitcher Johnny Funkhouser took the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Lewinski recorded both of DU's extra-base hits, one RBI and two runs, while Johnson finished with three hits and an RBI. Mulligan also drove in a pair on two hits, while Blanchard scored three times and had two singles.

Denison moves to 13-14 overall and 6-6 in the NCAC West, while Ohio Wesleyan sits at 20-8 and 9-3 in divisional play. The Big Red returns to action tomorrow when they host a doubleheader with No. 15 Baldwin Wallace. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
