A doubles sweep to open the match helped power 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve to a 6-3 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Granville.
Juniors Taylor Hawkins and Meg Chiumento, and freshman Courtney Brown picked up the Big Red's three points at the top three singles flights. Brown ended the Spartan shutout bid by picking up her third win over a regionally-ranked opponent. The DU freshman, who entered the match ranked 18th in the central region won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over 17th-ranked Marianne Bonanno at No. 2 singles.
Chiumento earned the second point at the third flight with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Michelle Djohan.
Hawkins closed out the match with a battle at No. 1 singles. Entering the match ranked 11th in the region, Hawkins took on fifth-ranked Nithya Kanagaseagar. The DU junior closed out the match by picking up her fifth-consecutive win and her fifth over a ranked opponent with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-3).
Denison falls to 13-7 on the year, while Case Western Reserve improves to 10-6. The Big Red returns to action next weekend when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for the 2015 NCAC Tournament. The three-day event will begin on Friday and run through Sunday.
