Box Score 2 Ohio Wesleyan took a pair of games from Denison on Saturday afternoon in Delaware. The Battling Bishops won game one, 6-4 and pulled away for an 11-6 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, OWU's C.J. Tosino blasted a first inning 3-run homer to left field off of Denison starter Zack Huarte. The Big Red would respond in the top of the second when Lascelles Lagares stroked an RBI single to left field, scoring Tanner Johnson.
In the third inning, DU would cut the deficit to one run when Ryan Mulligan scored on a wild pitch by Bishop starter Charles Cooper. In the top of the fifth, Lagares struck again with a double that scored Johnson. Nick Marsit followed with a base hit, plating Lagares. Marsit's single gave DU its first lead of the game at 4-3.
The Bishops would take the lead right back with three runs in the home half of the fifth. In the seventh, Denison would bring the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs but OWU closer Brett Kiser would strike out Georgie Montes to end the game.
Cooper got the win for OWU to improve to 4-1 on the year. Kiser earned his third save while Tosino led the team offensively going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.
Lagares went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Mulligan, Marsit and Jack Blanchard also posted multi-hit games. Huarte went the distance and took the loss, dropping to 3-2 on the year.
In game two, Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to a 10-2 lead after four innings. Denison threatened in the fifth when Mulligan stroked a bases loaded, base clearing double to the gap in right center field.
In the sixth, Lagares homered to left field and Zac Lewinski followed with a base hit to left. Marsit dropped a bunt single and after a sacrifice bunt by Blanchard, DU had runners on second and third with one out, trailing 10-6. Will Clyne would come on to pitch for Ohio Wesleyan starter Kevin Zullo and he would retire the next two DU hitters, stifling the Big Red rally.
The Bishops would add one more run in the seventh, setting the final at 11-6. Denison starter Ian Barry pitched two innings and allowed five runs off three hits. Adam Goldstein worked the fifth and sixth innings in relief and did not allow a run while surrendering two hits. Connor Hanrahan closed out the final two innings, giving up one run off one hit.
Denison pounded out 14 hits in game two, Montes, Johnson, Mulligan, Charlie Apfelbach and Lewinski all had two hits. Mulligan led the team with three RBIs.
The Big Red and the Battling Bishops will return to action on Sunday for games three and four of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
