Seniors shine in win over Wabash

Box Score

Eighteen different players scored at least one goal as the Denison Big Red handed Wabash College a 25-1 loss on Saturday at Piper Stadium.  With the win, Denison improves to 11-3 overall while moving to 6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Big Red eased into this one, scoring three goals in the opening quarter thanks to goals by Nick Caravana, Teddy Powell and Will Donohue.

In the second quarter the flood gates opened as DU went off for nine goals off 22 shot attempts.  Liam Rooney was the only multi-goal scorer in the quarter.  The other seven tallies came from Blair Farinholt, Nick Bortolani, Eric Baumgardner, Drew Newman, Justin DeMarchi, Brian Miller and Charlie Lippitt.

Leading 12-1 at the half, the Big Red would pump in 10 more goals in the third quarter.  Liam Donovan scored twice in the quarter and would finish with a game-high three assists.  Derek Finney also scored two of his game-high three goals in the third quarter.  Other goals would come from Jack Thomas, James Meager, Sam Fiedorek and a second from DeMarchi.

In the fourth, Thomas Hayes and Chris Drake netted their first goals of the season while Finney polished things off with a hat trick.

Denison outshot Wabash 74-6.  The Little Giants turned the ball over 26 times and 15 of those were caused by the Big Red's defense.  Cole Perry, Nick Cargas, John Reinhardt and Newman all posted two caused turnovers.  Newman also posted two ground balls while scoring the second goal of his career in the second quarter on an intercepted clearing pass by the Wabash goalie.

Clark Bullington got the start and played 23 minutes of action. He finished with one save.  Chris Thomas came in relief and made one save in 37 minutes of play.  Wabash goalie Todd Hoogland racked up 22 saves in goal for the Little Giants.

DU won 22-of-30 faceoff situations as Baumgardner paced the team by going 7-for-8.  He also tied with senior Max Burge for the team-lead in ground balls with six.

All nine of Denison's seniors started today's contest and with 5:56 to play in the third quarter, a penalty on Wabash's Caleb Neal allowed Benjie Colberg to take the field for the first time since suffering an injury versus Roanoke in late February.  Colberg attempted two shots with Denison's man-up offense, sending his first shot off the pipe and the second into the net of the Wabash goalie.  Despite failing to score it was a triumphant return for the senior captain who was playing in his 33rd career contest.

Denison's 2015 senior class which consists of Clint Barber, Max Burge, Nick Caravana, Ben Hearn, Charlie Houk, Matt Neeson, Drew Newman and Teddy Powell will leave as the winningest group in program history. They currently boast a record of 56-8 which equates to a .875 winning percentage.  In North Coast Athletic Conference play they have gone 27-1 since 2012 and last year the team took a 19-0 record to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Denison will close out its regular season on Monday against Wooster at 7:30 p.m.  That game will be picked up with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter with the Big Red leading 6-2.
