Box Score Ohio Wesleyan's John Umbach scored with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, breaking an 8-8 tie. Denison would have one final chance to tie the game with 14 seconds left but a defensive stand by the Bishops would would send them to a hard-fought 9-8 win over the Big Red from Selby Stadium.
Denison trailed 6-2 at the half but came on strong in the third quarter, outscoring fourth-ranked OWU, 4-1. With just over three minutes to play in the third, Denison would take advantage of a Battling Bishop penalty when Will Donohue hit Blair Farinholt who sniped a goal from long range, drawing DU to within one goal of the lead at 7-6.
Just over a minute into the fourth quarter DU would tie the game at 7-7 when Rooney hit Fairnholt for another man-up goal. The penalty which was called on Ohio Wesleyan's Kyle Foster was a three minute unreleasable. That allowed Denison to remain in extra-man, which they did until Donohue's shot was saved by OWU's Ryan McMahon. The Bishops would kill the penalty and after moving to full-strength, Brendan Bouchard fired a deep shot that found nylon, making the score 8-7 in favor of the home team.
With 5:12 to play, unsportsmanlike conduct flags were thrown on both teams, creating a five-on-five situation for the next 60 seconds. OWU would turn the ball over early in the penalty when Ben Hearn checked the ball loose from Bouchard. Hern would scoop up the ball and cross midfield where he would find Donohue who quickly hit Nick Bortolani in front of the goal for the equalizer with 4:20 to play.
Penalties were a major factor throughout the contest, especially in the latter stages of the fourth. With 2:49 left, Ben Duhoski was called for an illegal body check on Foster. The Bishops would proceed to send five shots at DU goalie Clark Bullington. One was turned away by the Big Red netminder while four sailed wide of the cage.
After a timeout with 1:31 to play, OWU would send three more shots wide of the cage only to have Denison defensive midfielder, Hearn, flagged for tripping with 56 seconds remaining. That would put Ohio Wesleyan in extra-man for the remainder of regulation. OWU would work the ball around Denison's zone until Marcus Dietz hit Umbach in front of the goal where he made a nifty move to slip the ball past Bullington for the eventual game winner.
Denison would have one last gasp as Bishop win John Griffin was called for a delay of game penalty after DU was awarded a violation win on the ensuing faceoff. With 14 seconds left on the clock the Big Red had a man-up advantage and a chance to tie.
With five seconds left, James Meager drove past goal line extended and tried for the turnaround pass to Farinholt who was cutting toward the cage. The ball was deflected away from Farinholt by an OWU long pole, allowing time to expire.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak vs. the Battling Bishops. It also marks jus the third loss to Ohio Wesleyan over the past decade. Since 2006, the Big Red are 12-3 against their rivals from Delaware, Ohio.
Donohue led Denison with three goals and two assists. Farinholt finished with two goals off a team-high nine shot attempts. DU's three remaining goals came from Nick Caravana, Bortolani and Meager. Eric Baumgardner won 13-of-20 faceoff tries and he led the way with seven ground balls. Bullington enjoyed one of his best games in the cage for DU. He posted 13 saves while facing 41 shots.
Ohio Wesleyan got an equally impressive performance from McMahon in goal. He posted four saves while facing 42 shots. Umbach, Timmy Minkler and Bouchard all scored twice for OWU.
Denison's nine-game winning streak is snapped as they fall to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Ohio Wesleyan improves to 12-0 and 6-0 in the NCAC. The Big Red will return to action on Wednesday (April 15) when they travel to Kenyon College for a 4 p.m. faceoff with the Lords.
