DU rallies to knock off Kalamazoo

The 30th-ranked Big Red rallied from an early deficit to defeated Kalamazoo, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Markin Center in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Trailing by a point after doubles play, Denison needed a strong effort in singles play if they wanted to pull off a come-from-behind victory. Junior Jackson O'Gorman-Bean quickly erased the Hornets' one-point lead with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory at the third flight. The home team wasted no time regaining the lead when David DeSimone posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Casey Cempre at No. 2 singles.

DU's third one-point deficit of the match was short lived as freshman Jack O'Koniewski tied the match with his fourth-singles victory. O'Koniewski defeated Eric De Witt via 7-5, 6-1 scores.  Denison grabbed its first lead of the day when senior Grant Veltman picked up a hard-fought win over Branden Metzler at the top flight. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Veltman rebounded with a 6-3 victory of his own. The senior found himself trailing in the third set. However, a late rally resulted in a 7-5 win in the tiebreaking set.

Now ahead 4-3, the Big Red need a victory in one of the final two flights to secure the comeback. Sophomore Owen Smith provided that match-clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Elan Dantus. Senior Jeffrey LoDuca collected DU's fourth-straight singles win, closing out the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spencer Navarre.

Denison's doubles victory came at the third flight where Smith and freshman Grant MacPherson edged De Witt and Navarre 9-8 (7-2).

DU improves to 2-4 on the year, while the Hornets fall to 4-3. The Big Red will return to action on March 16 when they take on Tufts in Claremont, Calif. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT.
