Denison hands No. 23 Polar Bears its third loss of the season

Box Score

Denison's offense broke through with four runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh and that would be enough to hand No. 23 Ohio Northern a 10-3 loss from Big Red field.  The win snaps a three-game skid for Denison. It also improves their record to 7-7 while Ohio Northern falls for just the third time this season as they leave Granville 14-3.

Trailing 2-0 through five innings, Denison led off its half of the sixth with walks from Charlie Apfelbach and Evan Flax.  DU's leading hitter, Georgie Montes, dropped down a beautiful bunt toward third base that he beat out, loading the bases for Ryan Mulligan.

Ohio Northern would make the call to the bullpen, replacing starting pitcher John Kipicky with Ben Glischinski.  Mulligan would jump all over a 0-2 pitch from Glischinski, driving a shot over the right fielders head, to the warning track.  That would score two and Mulligan would stop at second with a double.

After a Sam Frazen ground out advanced Mulligan to third, Brandon Morgan would drive in Montes with a sacrifice fly to center.  Tanner Johnson extended the hit parade with an RBI single to right that plated Mulligan.

Denison would take a 4-2 lead into the seventh.  ONU's Brady Foley drove a 3-1 pitch from Johnny Funkhouser over the wall, cutting the advantage to one.  With two outs and the go-ahead run on first base, Denison's Perley Provost would retire Nick Elzroth on a fielder's choice to second to get out of the inning.

The game would be broken open in the seventh by RBI singles from Mulligan and Frazen.  Morgan drove in his second RBI with another sacrifice fly and with two runners on, Johnson lined a shot toward third base that was misplayed by ONU's Jordan Bostater.  When the ball reached left fielder Dan McMullen it was misplayed there as well, allowing two more runs to score.  It appeared as if Johnson would end up at third base after the two errors but McMullen's throw hit Johnson in the back and the ball ricocheted toward the Denison dugout, allowing Johnson to come all the way around and score.  The two-error play scored three runs and put Denison on top, 10-3.

Mulligan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Morgan drove in two runs via sacrifice flies while Frazen and Johnson both added RBIs.

Denison starter Kyle Colgain worked the first four innings.  He allowed one run and one hit while striking out two.  Funkhouser (2-0) picked up the win by pitching 2.2 innings.  He allowed four hits and one earned run.  The game was closed out by Provost and Mulligan who combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

ONU starter, Kopicky (1-1) took the loss. He went 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs off four hits and six walks.

Denison will open North Coast Athletic Conference divisional play on Friday (April 3) when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. for a four-game series with DePauw University that will conclude on Saturday, April 4.
