Box Score No. 16 Denison scored seven goals in the first quarter on Tuesday night at Hiram and that set the tone for a 15-1 win over the Terriers. The win runs the Big Red's winning streak to eight. Hiram falls to 2-7.
All seven of DU's first quarter tallies were scored by different players as Nick Caravana opened things up with a goal three minutes into the contest. Will Donohue followed with a man-up goal 30 seconds later off a pass from Caravana. After an Eric Baumgardner faceoff win, Liam Rooney would score 22 seconds later off a pass from Donohue, giving Denison a 3-0 lead.
With 9:49 to go in the quarter, Josh Happ scored off another assist from Caravana. The final two goals of the first quarter would come from Jamie McCahan, Nick Bortolani via Brian Miller and finally Sam Fiedorek.
Denison would strike five more times in the second quarter as McCahan, Caravana, Rooney, Justin DeMarchi and Bortolani put their team on top 12-0 at the half.
The Big Red's scoring would end in the third quarter thanks to goals by Jake Ellis, Alex Paulus and an EMO goal by Liam Donovan.
Caravana paced the squad with two goals and two assists off two shot attempts. Other multi-goal scorers were Rooney, McCahan and Bortolani.
Clark Bullington got the start and played 30 minutes in goal. He posted seven saves. Chris Thomas made one save while playing the third and four quarters. Cole Perry led the defense with five ground balls. Baumgardner scooped up four ground balls and was 5-for-6 when facing off. Michael Haueisen also won five of his seven faceoff attempts.
DU outshot Hiram 50-20 and dominated ground balls 45-23. The man-up unit was 2-for-3 and the Big Red won 12-of-19 draws.
Hiram goalie Sawyer Lott played well in the cage for the Terriers. He ended with 16 saves. Their lone goal came from Chris Lekan with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter.
Denison improves to 8-2 and 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Hiram drops to 2-7 and 0-4 in conference play. The Big Red will return to Piper Stadium on Saturday for a 1 p.m. faceoff against Oberlin College.
