Case takes pair from Big Red

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison suffered a 9-7 loss to Case Western Reserve in game one and fell 8-5 in the nightcap from Big Red Field.

In the opener, Denison held a 5-2 lead over the Spartans until a five-run seventh inning gave Case a two-run lead.

Denison did most of its damage in the fifth inning thanks to a base clearing double by Evan Flax that drove in Charlie Apfelbach, Ryan Mulligan and Georgie Montes.  That DU lead would stand until the seventh when the Spartans pieced together a four-hit five-run innint powered by a two-run double by Eric Eldred. The go-ahead run would come via a bases loaded walk from Connor Hanrahan who had just relieved Perley Provot who subbed in for Denison starter Zack Huarte in the sixth.  Antonio Damiano would single in Josh Neal and Aaron Cain would score on a passed ball for the fifth and final run of the inning.

In the eighth, Montes delivered with a two-run double to left field that scored Jake Meegan and Flax.  That trimmed the CWRU lead to 8-7 with only one out in the inning.  The Spartans would turn to closer Daniel Sondag who would get out of the jam with a strike out and a fielder's choice to second base.

Connor Tagg would get the win for CWRU while Dondag picked up his fifth save of the season. Huarte pitched five innings for Denison and allowed two earned runs while striking out five.  The loss went to Provot who worked 1.2 innings of relief.  He allowed four earned runs and three hits.  Hanrahan and JT Trimble worked the final 2.1 innings for the Big Red.

Denison's offense was led in game one by Flax who was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.  Montes was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Mulligan finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, two walks and two runs scored.

Eldred provided the bulk of the offense for Case as he went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored.

In game two, Case used a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead.  Denison would chip away and would trail 5-4 through six innings, but a three spot by the Spartans would give them some breathing room.

Montes went 3-for-5 while Mulligan, Eric Zmuda and Tanner Johnson all logged multi-hit games.

Connor Tagg got the win in relief in bot games and Sondag picked up another save by pitching a scoreless ninth.  The loss was charged to Ian Barry who allowed four earned runs in six innings pitched.
