No. 17 DU powers past Tigers

Box Score

Senior Blair Farinholt's six goals helped push 17th-ranked Denison past Wittenberg, 13-6, on Saturday in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville.

Heading into the second period down 3-1, Farinholt pulled Denison to within one with his first goal of the game at 11:55. Roughly three and a half minute later, the Tigers Matt Hugdahl registered his third goal of the afternoon to push Witt's lead back to two goals.

Over the course of the next 19 minutes, the high-powered Big Red offense rattled off six-straight goals to take an 8-4 lead towards the end of the third period. Liam Rooney round the back of the cage for the first time to shrink DU's deficit in the second, while back-to-back unassisted goals by Farinholt gave the home team their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Farinholt helped open the third-quarter scoring when he found Rooney for another Denison goal at 9:26. Goals by senior Matt Neeson and Farinholt would cap off the Big Red run that resulted in the four-goal advantage. Wittenberg's main offensive outlet, Hugdahl, added to his goal total with less than two to play in the third. Denison went on to outscore the Tigers 5-1 in the final period to secure the victory. The Big Red also scored 11 of the game's final 13 goals.

Farinholt played a part in seven of DU's 13 goals with six goals and one assist. Rooney also had a hat trick in the win, while sophomore Jamie McCahan chipped in two scores. Neeson and Alex Paulus scored Denison's other two goals. Senior Clint Barber led the team with eight ground balls, while Eric Baumgardner scooped up seven. Baumgardner also won 16-of-23 face-offs. Sophomore Teddy Sawyer finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Clark Bullington made 10 saves en route to earning the win in goal.

Hugdahl paced the Tigers with four goals, while Zach Shy logged two assists. Riley Boehm and TJ Smith combined for 10 of Witt's 21 ground balls, while Boehm also went 7-for-21 at the X. Jay Dolan took the loss in goal despite making 11 saves.

Denison improves to 7-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in NCAC play, while Wittenberg falls to 4-4 and 2-1 in conference play. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Hiram, Ohio for a 7 p.m. game against the Terriers.
