The 30th-ranked Denison women's tennis team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a 9-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red took a commanding 3-0 lead in the match following a sweep in doubles play. Senior Heather Abzug and sophomore Emily Holloway picked up DU's first point with an 8-1 victory at the third flight. The freshmen team of Courtney Brown and Rochell Issa quickly added to Denison's lead with an 8-0 decision over Alex Webb and Whitney Lonnemann at No. 2 doubles. The Big Red's final point came when juniors Taylor Hawkins and Meg Chiumento defeated Brooke Butterworth and Taylor Heasley via 8-2 score at the top flight.
Denison won all six singles flights in straight sets. Brown earned her first win at the No. 1 singles and her third-straight overall with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Butterworth. Issa (6-0, 6-2) and Holloway (6-0, 6-1) extended their winning streaks to seven and six, respectively, with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Freshman Carol Vitellas cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lonnemann at fourth singles, while freshman Maddie Boster and junior Sarah Torrence earned the Big Red's final two points of the match. Boster defeated Meghan Guthrie with matching 6-1 scores at No. 5, while Torrence earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kimberly Baione in her season debut.
DU improves to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC West Division, while the Bishops fall to 4-6 and 0-1 in division play. Denison returns to action tomorrow (March 27) when they host 22nd-ranked Hope College in a big regional clash at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. Match time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
