Box Score Ryan Hanahan went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate to lead 22nd-ranked Marietta past the Denison Big Red, 19-1, on Wednesday night in Granville, Ohio.
The Pioneers scored in six of their nine trips to the plate, highlighted by a combined 11 runs in the third and fourth innings. Hanahan and Tim McCoy both finished one hit shy of the cycle. Hanahan recorded three doubles, a triple and two singles, while McCoy needed just a single after going 3-for-4 at the plate. Mitch Geers and Austin Harvey also went 3-for-4 to help the Marietta offense. The Etta Express finished with 19 runs on 18 hits, half of which were extra-base knocks.
The Big Red's lone run came in the bottom of the first inning when senior Georgie Montes scored on a Charlie Apfelbach ground out to short. Montes, Apfelbach and Ryan Mulligan were the three Denison starters that recorded a hit. DU's other two hits came from subs Andrew Marlino and Nick Marsit.
Marietta starter Tyler Nieberding picked up his second win of the year after allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Mulligan took the loss on the mound for DU, giving up seven runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings. Royce Park saw the most time on the mound for Denison after tossing three innings in relief. Park scattered three hits, surrendered two runs and struck out six.
Denison falls to 6-5, while the Pioneers improve to 10-5. The Big Red continues their current homestand on Saturday with a doubleheader against Case Western Reserve. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
