The Denison men's tennis team opened North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play with an 8-1 victory at Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday inside the Gordon Field House in Delaware, Ohio.
The Big Red won two of the three doubles flights to take a one-point match lead into singles play. Senior Casey Cempre and Jeffrey LoDuca earned an 8-5 decision over Elliot Garwood and Jacob Volbers at No. 2, while Ryan Brown and Grant MacPherson were victorious over Alex Lutz and David Rich, 8-2, at third doubles.
Denison pulled off the clean sweep in single to secure the win. Senior Grant Veltman and junior Jackson O'Gorman-Bean avenged their No. 1 doubles loss to Shouta Kuamachi and Jakraraj Rungaseng with singles victories at first and third, respectively. Veltman defeated Fukamachi 6-4, 6-2, while O'Gorman-Bean's win over Rungaseng was by 6-3, 6-2 scores.
Cempre ended his 10-match skid with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Garwood. Jack O'Koniewski (7-5, 6-0), LoDuca (6-3, 6-1) and Jamie McDonald (6-0, 6-0) were victorious at flights four, five and six, respectively.
Denison improves to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while OWU drops to 10-8 and 0-1 in league play. The Big Red will play their first home match since last September on Saturday when they host Earlham College at 1 p.m.
