Box Score Denison and Muskingum combined for 31 hits and 21 runs but a four-run seventh inning for the Big Red would be the difference as Denison won its home opener, 11-10.
Trailing 10-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Tanner Johnson led off the inning by singling an 0-2 count to right field. Ryan Mulligan followed by drilling the first offering from Jarin McIntosh over the centerfielder's head. That set the table for a 2-run single by Charlie Apfelbach that cut the deficit to 10-9.
With one out and runners on first and second, Brandon Morgan singled to right-center and advanced to second when the throw went to third base. Morgan's hit drove in Apfelbach, tying the game at 10-10.
With Evan Flax representing the go-ahead run on third base and only one out, Muskingum went to the bullpen and brought in Brandon Bush. Denison also looked to be bench and sent Eric Zmuda to the plate to pinch hit for rookie Jack Blanchard. Zmuda jumped on Bush's first pitch and lifted a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Flax from third base.
Over the final 3.2 innings, Denison pitchers Perley Provost and Connor Hanrahan held the Muskies scoreless with just one hit. Provost was the pitcher of record when DU took the lead, resulting in the freshman's first career victory. Hanrahan worked the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Johnson went 4-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI. Mulligan was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and one run scored. Morgan also enjoyed a three hit day at the plate. He drove in a pair and scored one run. In all, Denison had seven players post multiple hit games and all nine players in the lineup had at least one hit.
Muskingum was led by Austin DeVore who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Steve O'Hara got the start and allowed five earned runs and nine hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
Kyle Colgain was Denison's starting pitcher. He worked the first three innings, allowing five earned runs off four hits. Andrew Bruss pictured 2.1 innings in relief of Colgain. He allowed six hits and three earned runs.
Denison improves to 6-4 while Muskingum drops to 6-9. Denison returns to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to John Carroll for a single 9-inning game that is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
