Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Denison baseball team closed out its 2015 spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep of Lancaster Bible on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Big Red held on for a 7-6 victory in game one before shutting out the Chargers 14-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a solo run in the second and two more in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the frame, senior Ryan Mulligan scored Georgie Montes from third with a sacrifice fly to center. Sophomore Evan Flax, after swiping second base, crossed the dish on a base hit to left by Charlie Apfelbach.

DU added four more runs in the fourth. Zac Lewinski plated the first run with sac fly to left that scored Nick Marsit. Lascelles Lagares represented the second Big Red run when he scored on a Montes single. Montes and freshman Jack Blanchard would both touch the plate on a Flax single through the right side. Blanchard scored a second time in the sixth on an Apfelbach base knock.

The Chargers would start to rally in the top of the seventh with three runs on singles by Nate Long and Brian Niedergall. However, reliever Connor Hanrahan induced a ground out to short to secure the one-run victory.

Montes went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while Flax and Apfelbach both finished with a pair of hits. Apfelbach also drove in a pair. Starter Ian Barry picked up his first victory of the year after giving up three runs (one earned) in six innings on the hill. Barry scattered six hits and struck out six.

In game two, freshman Zack Huarte tossed a complete-game shutout in just his second start with the Big Red. Huarte (1-1) struck out seven batters and scattered three hits in seven innings of work.

Huarte's strong outing on the mound was backed up by a 14-run, 20-hit performance by the DU offense. After pushing across five runs in the first-two innings, the Big Red bats erupted for eight runs on eight hits in the top of the third to break the game open. Eric Zmuda got things going with an RBI single to right that scored Alex Enrique. Blanchard followed with a sac fly to center that allowed Tanner Johnson to cross the dish. Montes singled in Sam Frazen, while a two-run double by Flax scored Montes and Zmuda. With two on, Apfelbach belted a triple to center that drove in Mulligan and Flax. Apfelbach scored DU's eighth run of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to left by Enrique. The Big Red ended up sending 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

Denison added its 14th run of the game in the seventh when Jed Barkin hit a single through the right side that scored Andrew Marlino. Huarte would retire the side in order in the seventh to secure his first-collegiate victory.

Montes, Johnson and Zmuda all registered three hits in the win. Five different hitters registered two RBIs, while Montes scored a game-high three runs. Mulligan, Johnson and Zmuda also touched the dish twice each.

Denison returns to Ohio with a 5-4 record, while Lancaster Bible falls to 0-7. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday (March 24) when they host Muskingum University. First pitch from Granville is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
