Rams edge Big Red with early offense

Box Score

Three runs in the first four innings proved to be enough for Farmingdale State as they clipped Denison, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Rams got on the board with solo runs in the opening two frames. Tom Rydzewski and Anthony Alvino each scored unearned tallies after a pair of Denison miscues. After Michael Marino led off the fourth with a base hit, Alvino ripped a one-out triple down the right line to extend Farmingdale State's lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Big Red pushed two across to shrink the deficit to one. With one on and one out, sophomore Alex Enrique dropped a double into center that allowed Brandon Morgan to go from first to third. Freshman Jack Blanchard followed with a bunt single to third that scored Morgan and moved Enrique up 90 feet. The sophomore first baseman eventually touched the dish on a sacrifice fly to right by Tucker Davison.

Neither team would plate a run over the final five frames, while Denison logged the only two hits during that span. DU did get the game-tying run on in the ninth, but a pinch-hit lineout to second brought the game to an end.

Enrique went 2-for-4 with a double and run to pace the Big Red offense. Blanchard also had a hit and an RBI for Denison. Senior Ryan Mulligan suffered the loss in his first start on the hill this season. Mulligan (0-1) gave up just one earned run, scattered four hits and struck out four in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Perley Provost and sophomore Connor Hanrahan combined for 3.2 innings of hitless ball with three strikeouts.

Alvino was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored, while Richard Sullivan and Marino had Farmingdale State's only other hits. Ryan O'Connor (1-0) picked up the win out of the pen after surrendering just two hits and striking out two in five shutout innings. Starter Kevin Cashman tossed the first four frames, allowing two runs on five hits with three Ks.

Denison falls to 2-3 on the year, while the Rams improve to 2-4. The Big Red will return to action on Friday with a doubleheader against UMass-Boston in Port Charlotte. Game one of the twinbill is scheduled for 9 a.m.
