Box Score With 10:10 remaining in the second quarter No. 19 Denison was clinging to a 5-4 lead against the undefeated Albion Britons. Over the next 27 minutes the Big Red would explode with 12 unanswered goals resulting in an impressive 18-6 victory from Piper Stadium.
Albion checked into the game with a victory over 2014 NCAA Tournament second-round qualifier, Aurora, on its resume. They were also averaging just under 14 goals per game.
The Britons got on the board first when Joe Braley scored with 10:36 to play in the fourth. The Big Red would proceed to rattle off four-straight goals over the next six minutes. Blair Farinholt started things off and Brian Miller followed off a pass from Liam Rooney. After a faceoff win by Eric Baumgardner and the second of three-straight ground balls by Cole Perry on the wing, Baumgardner scored for the first time this season.
Four minutes later, Miller would find Will Donohue for his sixth goal of the campaign after an errant pass from Albion's Brad Bogus.
Leading 5-2 late in the first, things looked to be going the Big Red's way. A quick goal by Alexander Dziewit off a pass from Zach Hubbell with 17 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Britons some momentum heading into the second period.
Just as he did to start the game, Albion's Braley would score unassisted with 10:10 to go in the second. That pulled the Britons to within one at 5-4. The Big Red would proceed to score five goals over the next four minutes of action and in a flash, led 10-4. The five goal barrage was the result of two goals by Rooney, two by Farinholt and one by Donohue. Both Donohue and Farinholt scored in extra-man situations.
In the third quarter, the Denison defense would hold Albion without a goal while the offense put five more tallies on the board. For the game, Rooney and Farinholt paced DU with four goals each. Rooney also added a pair of assists. Donohue posted three goals and one assist while Milller chipped in two goals and one helper. First-year Jake Ellis got in the act with two goals while Baumgardner, Jamie McCahan and Alex Paulus rounded out the scoring.
DU won the ground ball game 31-23 and outshot the Britons 45-20. There were eight extra-man opportunities in the game. Albion was 0-for-5 while Denison was perfect, going 3-for-3. Baumgardner won 16-of-25 faceoffs and led the way with nine ground balls. Perry was excellent on the wing as he finished with a career-high seven ground balls. Albion committed 19 turnovers, eight of which were caused by Denison. Teddy Sawyer led the home team with two caused turnovers.
In goal, Elliott Avis played the first three quarters and finished with two saves. Clark Bullington added one save in the fourth quarter. Albion goalie, Kyle Formanczyk, played all 60 minutes and finished with six saves.
Denison improves to 3-2 on the year and will return to action on Sunday (March 15) when they host Aurora University at 12 p.m.
