3's rain down in win over OC

Denison shot a blistering 70 percent in the first half en route to a dominating 90-68 victory over Oberlin on Wednesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference action from Granville. The 22-point win marks DU's fourth in the last five games and its fourth-straight victory at Livingston Gymnasium.

The Big Red were firing on all cylinders, scoring on its first five possessions to build an 11-0 lead inside the first four minutes of play. That offensive burst was part of an 18-1 run that opened the contest and spanned just over six minutes. Denison's 18 points came off a 7-for-9 performance from the field, including a 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc.

DU continued to pile on the offense, eventually taking a 47-17 lead following a Bret Woolard three with 2:41 left in the half. Woolard's triple was the Big Red's seventh in eight first-half attempts, which equaled out to an 87.5-percent conversion rate. The home team grabbed a 31-point advantage twice before taking a 56-27 lead into the locker room.

Denison finished the half 21-for-30 (70 percent) from the field and 8-for-11 (73 percent) from 3-point range. In addition to scoring 24 points from long range, the Big Red also racked up 20 points in the paint in the opening period. The Yeomen went just 8-for-24 (33 percent) from the floor.

The Big Red maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout the entire second half, including a game-high 33-point advantage after Sheldon Freeman free throw gave DU a 73-40 lead with 10:04 to play. Oberlin shrunk the deficit to 22 on multiple occasions late, but the game was already decided with less than three minutes to go. The Big Red finished the game 32-for-61 (53 percent) from the field and 13-of-22 (59 percent) from the 3-point range. The team's 13 made threes tied the season-high mark in their first meeting with Oberlin back in December.

Denison's three-man senior class combined for 39 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. They also converted 63 percent from the field (17-for-27) and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Robby Weingart and Briggs King led the way with 14 points each. Weingart was 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 from deep. He also pulled down five boards and dished out four assists. King went 7-for-12 from the field and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Brad Woolard, the third member of the trio, chipped in 11 points and three assists in 16 minutes off the bench. Brad's twin brother Bret finished the contest with 12 points on 4-of-6 from floor. Bret also knocked down all three of his 3-point attempts for the second-consecutive game.

Nathan Cohen paced the Yeomen with 17 points, while Randy Ollie grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Cohen and Zach Meyers each had three assists, while Cohen came away with four steals.

With the win, Denison improves to 12-8 overall and 6-7 in the NCAC, while Oberlin falls to 8-12 and 4-9 in the conference. The Big Red returns to the road on Saturday when they travel to 20th ranked Wooster. Tip-off from Timkin Gymnasium in Wooster, Ohio is slated for 7:30 p.m.
