Box Score The Denison men's basketball team saw its 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament run come to an end on Tuesday night as they dropped a 101-68 at the College of Wooster.
Denison rolled into Wooster, Ohio feeling pretty good about their matchup with the second-seeded Fighting Scots. A lot of that had to do with the Big Red's 76-72 win at the then 20th-ranked Scots just two and a half weeks ago. However, as much as that win gave DU a confidence boost, it also served as motivation for Wooster heading into the quarterfinal contest.
Not looking for a repeat from Jan. 7, the Fighting Scots exploded out of the gate scoring the first 10 points of the game. Wooster continued to roll eventually building a 30-9 lead roughly six and a half minutes into the period. Denison started to chip away at the deficit, closing the gap to 34-22 with 8:51 to play. However, the hot-shooting Scots seemingly couldn't miss in the opening half as they took a 27-point lead into the locker room.
Wooster's 27-point half-time lead was a result of the home team's 72-percent conversion rate from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. The Fighting Scots were 23-for-32 from the field and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. A 27-point lead at the break coupled with a 50 percent shooting performance in the second period locked up the Wooster win.
On the night, Denison shot 32 percent (21-for-66) from the field and hit just 8-of-28 attempts from 3-point range. The Scots held a 44-36 edge on the glass and scored 60 of their 106 points in the paint.
Seniors Briggs King and Robby Weingart paced the Big Red offense with 16 and 14 points, respectively. King went 7-for-14 from the floor, while Weingart also dished out three assists. Sophomore David Meurer supplied 11 points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench, while senior Brad Woolard had nine points to go along with seven boards and four assists, both team highs.
Evan Pannell led all scorers with 23 points, while Dan Fanelly posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Spencer Williams also chipped in 13 points in 20 minutes.
Wooster (21-5) advances to the NCAC Tournament Semifinals where they will face Wabash in Delaware, Ohio on Friday (Feb. 27). Denison's season comes to a close with a record of 13-13.
