Box Score Cam Lewis tied a school record with eight goals helping No. 15 Washington and Lee to an 11-5 win over ninth-ranked Denison on Saturday afternoon from the Rissell-Schreyer Dome on the campus of Thiel College in Greenville, Pa.
With a hefty weather system moving through the Midwest, Denison and Washington and Lee sought refuge inside Thiel's heated inflatable dome. The Generals took the upper hand in the opening seconds of the contest as Lewis scored with just 19 seconds elapsed from the clock after a ground ball by Peter Schubert off the opening faceoff.
Less than two minutes later, Lewis would score again and Denison would be left to play catch-up the remainder of the day. After one quarter the Generals led 4-0 thanks to three goals by Lewis and five turnovers by the Big Red.
At the 9:16 mark of the second quarter, Denison would get on the scoreboard when Jamie McCahan scored an unassisted goal. Over the remainder of the second quarter, neither team would score despite a combined 13 shot attempts.
Denison would open the third quarter with a goal by Blair Farinholt after a proceeding shot by Liam Rooney went high and beyond the end line.
With the Big Red feeling some momentum for the first time, Lewis would net his fifth goal off an assist by Andrew Riehl to put the Generals back on top, 6-2.
DU would bounce right back when Farinholt connected with Benjie Colberg for his first of two goals in the quarter. The two teams would head into the final 15 minutes of play with the Generals leading 8-4.
At the 13:39 mark of the fourth quarter, Washington and Lee's Noah Lessing was flagged for slashing and 28 seconds into the penalty, Farinholt converted off a pass from James Meager. Trailing 8-5 with just over 13 minutes to go it was now or never for the Big Red.
Over the next 10 minutes of action, Lewis would notch his sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the game, sealing the 11-5 win for W&L.
The loss marked the first regular season defeat for Denison since April 6, 2013, a span of 687 days.
Farinholt led DU with two goals and one assist off eight shot attempts. Colberg scored two goals and McCahan rounded out the scoring with one goal. Max Burge led the defense with three caused turnovers and junior goalie Clark Bullington paced the team with five ground balls. In the cage he finished with 13 saves while playing all 60 minutes. Eric Baumgardner was 10-of-18 faceing off, while his counterpart, Bobby Doyle, went 8-for-19.
Lewis' eight goals came off just 13 shots. The 6'4" senior attack also added three ground balls.
The Generals improve to 1-1 on the season while Denison drops to 0-1. The Big Red will look to get back on track this Wednesday (Feb. 25) when they travel to No. 18 Roanoke for a 3 p.m. faceoff with the Maroons.
