The Denison women's swimming and diving team won five out of the final six events to close out a dominating performance at the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship from the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio. The Big Red totaled 1,930 points and Kenyon finished with 1,740 while DePauw ended in third with 1,176.
Denison set four conference records at this year's championship and two fell on Saturday night as Campbell Costley got things going with her fourth NCAC title of the weekend in the 1,650 freestyle. Costley covered the mile-long swim in 16:43.71. Her teammate, Taylor Johns, was right behind in second, touching in 16:44.13. Eliza Flaherty would take seventh in 17:10.82. Costley was the break-out star for the Big Red as she captured titles in the 500 free, the 200 free, the 800 free relay and the mile. She was named the NCAC Swimmer of the Year in the post-meet awards ceremony, marking the ninth female swimmer from Denison to win the award.
Senior Molly Willingham won the 200 backstroke for the second-straight year by touching in 2:03.15. This was her third career individual title and her fourth conference championship overall. Fourth place in the 200 back would belong to Alex Elizeus who finished in 2:07.34.
DU would make it 3-for-3 as Carolyn Kane took the top spot in the 100 free, leading a group of five Denison swimmers who finished in the top-six in the event. Kane set the pace with a pool record time of 50.45. Ashley Yearwood followed in second in 51.00 while Mary Van Leuven (51.26) took fourth, Rima Jurjus (51.49) was fifth and Kate Wright (51.67) ended sixth. For Kane, this marked her third championship of the meet.
Kane, Yearwood, Wright and Van Leuven would all get an encore performance in the 400 free relay to close the meet and the foursome did not disappoint. They capped off the championship with a meet record and pool record time of 3:22.77.
Rookie Halli Garza would earn NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors thanks to her victory on Thursday in the 200 IM and tonight's win in the 200 fly where she set a new pool record and season-best time of 2:03.17. Krysta Garbarino finished second in 2:04.55 while Taylor Lifka was fifth (2:06.96) and Michelle Howell was seventh (2:07.89). Garbarino and Lifka also posted season-best 'B' cut times.
Friday's results would be rounded out by three top-8 swims in the 200 breaststroke. Marissa Bednarek was the runner-up after a time of 2:18.72 and Ellen Higdon was fourth in 2:22.13. Both were season-best times. Also swimming in the A-Final was Leigh Hartog who took eighth in 2:27.90.
For the meet, DU won 12 of 20 events. They also racked up 28 top-3 all-conference finishes. This is the seventh consecutive NCAC championship for Denison and their eighth in the last 12 years.
