Big Red falls in final seconds

Box Score

A tip-in by Wabash's Marcus Kammrath with 0.8 seconds left broke the tie and sent the Little Giants to a 68-66 win over the Denison Big Red from Crawfordsville, Ind.  Denison trailed by seven with three minutes to play, but a basket down low by Bret Woolard, followed by a David Meurer steal that resulted in a Darius White layup knotting the game at 66-66 with 1:22 to play.

Denison would get a stop on defense and with 36 seconds the Big Red went to Bret Woolard in the paint.  He tried an up and under move that was blocked by Kammrath.  The ball would go out of bounds during the rebound attempt and after a replay review, possession was awarded to the Little Giants.

With the shot clock turned off and 33 seconds remaining, Wabash let time tick down until the four second mark when Kyle Aiton took a jumper that bounced off the rim.  Kammrath and Woolard battled for the rebound but the ball was tipped by the taller Kammrath and with 0.8 seconds left the ball went through the hoop.

Denison would inbound the ball from under the Wabash basket.  Their pass would find Robby Weingart just beyond the halfcourt line but he was defended wall on the catch and was unable to take a legitimate attempt at a game-winning shot.

Wabash led most of the way, and held an 11 point lead early in the second half.  Denison would look to Meurer in the backcourt and Bret Woolard inside to help close the gap.  Meurer would finish with a game-high 24 points while going 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.  Bret Woolard added 12 points while Weingart chipped in 11 points.

The Little Giants controlled the boards, winning the rebounding battle 40-27.  Wabash also shot 53 percent for the game and were 7-of-14 from long range.  Denison shot 43 percent from the field and were 10-of-25 (.400) from downtown.

Wabash got 19 points from Daniel Purvlicis and 16 from Kasey Oetting.  Kammrath added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The win for Wabash creates some separation in the crowded North Coast Athletic Conference standings.  They improve to 15-8 and 10-6 in conference while Denison falls to 13-10 and 7-9 in league play.

The Big Red have two regular season games remaining.  On Wednesday (Feb. 18) they will travel to Hiram before hosting Allegheny College on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 3 p.m.
