Denison took an early 33-point lead after the opening night of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship held at the Trumbull Aquatics Center on the campus of Denison University.
All three of the Big Red divers qualified for the finals of the 3-meter event, led by sophomore Sarah Lopez's preliminary score of 414.60. Carrie Bookheimer had the fifth-best total with 352.35 preliminary points, while Katherine Hennigan finished the 11-dive prelims with 302.60. Kenyon's Maria Zarka recorded the highest preliminary total with an 11-dive score of 425.40.
In the final, Lopez was involved in a back-and-forth battle with the reigning NCAC 3-meter champion, Zarka. The DU sophomore's highest scoring dive came in the fifth round, an inward 2 ½ somersault tuck. Lopez earned a score of 52.65 with that dive. She finished the finals with 404.60 points, trailing only Zarka who won the event for the second-straight year with a total score of 439.20. Lopez's second-place finish garnered 31 points for DU.
Bookheimer moved up one spot from the preliminaries after scoring 346.30 points in the finals. Her fourth-place finish earned the Big Red 29 points towards the team score. Hennigan finished three spots behind Bookheimer, in seventh-place with a score of 336.60. Hennigan collected 26 tallies which resulted in 86 points for Denison.
Denison will return to the pool on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. for preliminaries in the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay. Finals will begin on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
