Denison wins Miami Invitational

For the third consecutive year the Denison University men leave the Miami Invitational as the team champion.  This year, the Big Red racked up 3,188.5 points while winning 10 events.  Second place Emory Unviersity trailed DU by 1,381.5 points in the team standings.  Third-place went to Miami with 1,736 while Urbana checked in fourth at 267.5 points.

Junior Jack Lindell continued his outstanding meet on Saturday when he won two events and broke his second varsity record of the weekend.  In the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly, Lindell posted a time of 1:48.59 which broke Jackson Humphrey's school-record time of 1:49.14 which was set in 2012.  Lindell's other Denison record came on Thursday night when he broke his own standard in the 200 IM.

In tonight's finals of the 200 fly, Lindell finished first in 1:49.39.  Third-place went to Andrew Rich (1:50.81) while Blake Kent followed in fourth at 1:51.89.  Places 6-8 would go to Aaron Saccurato (1:53.83), Kevin Brinegar (1:55.27) and Mitch Williams (1:56.65).

Lindell's second win of the night and fifth of the weekend would come in the 200 backstroke after a first-place time of 1:47.02.  Jason Wesseling would follow in second with a time of 1:48.36.  His season-best time came in prelims in 1:47.87.

Senior Ryan Fleming won the 100 freestyle with a season-best 'B' cut time of 44.70.  Conrad Wuorinen also logged a provisional cut time of 45.21 that resulted in a third-place finish.  Positions 7-9 would go to Max Howes (45.94), Stuart Hohm (46.10) and Wesseling (47.60).

In the first event of the night, Saccurato led the Big Red with a third place finish in the 1,650 freestyle.  He covered the mile-long race in 15:49.40.  Ben Burdick was fourth in 15:55.13 and Matt Hedman took fifth in 15:58.35.  Jackson Berman and PJ Fallon also recorded 'B' cut times after their seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively.  Berman touched in 16:04.37 while Fallon finished in 16:11.19.

First-year Ryan Stevenson finished second in the 200 breaststroke after a 'B' cut time of 2:03.31.  Another rookie, Jake Ball, followed in third at 2:04.10.  Sophomore Brendan Howley dropped nearly two seconds off his prelim time and finished fifth in 2:04.60 while Joe Brunk followed in sixth place at 2:04.81.

The Big Red's 400 free relay team of Fleming, Wuorinen, Hohm and Howes closed out the meet with a second-place finish and time of 3:00.21.

Denison's next intercollegiate competition will be on Jan. 9 when they host DePauw.
