Box Score A pair of first half goals helped lift the DePauw Tigers to a 2-0 victory over Denison in the championship match of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind.
The Big Red held a commanding 10-2 advantage in shots in the opening period. Unfortunately, those two Tiger attempts found their way into the back of the goal. Junior Jen Dimos capitalized on a failed clear and scored from roughly 25 yards out in the 7th minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Denison went on to unload eight-straight shots over the next 31 minutes. Maggie Armstrong and Ashlyn Flaherty each had a pair of attempts stopped by goalie Riley Riordan, while Madison Smith rung a shot off the crossbar. One of the best chances came at 37:34 when Meg Wozniak had an opening inside the 18 yard box, but her shot went over the goal.
The Tigers would counter after the high shot when Kelsey Cobbs slipped a through ball to Kathryn Ruark who scored on a breakaway at 38:57. DePauw held a 4-2 edge in shots in the second half, with three of their attempts requiring sophomore goalie Jenny Herold to make a save. The Big Red nearly cut the deficit in half in the 51st minute when Armstrong worked through the DePauw defense and found herself one-on-one with Riordan. However, seconds before Armstrong would attempt her shot the junior keeper made a sliding play to end the threat.
Denison outshot DePauw 12-6, with both teams recorded five shots on frame. The Big Red had five corners to the Tigers four, while DePauw committed eight fouls compared to seven infractions whistled on Denison.
Armstrong finished the match with four shots, including two on goal, while two of Flaherty's three attempts were on net. Wozniak also had three attempts, while the final two were recorded by Smith and Anne Denz. Herold finished the match with three second-half saves.
Dimos led the Tigers with two shots, which included the game-winning goal, while Ruark scored on her only shot of the match. All five of Riordan's saves came in the first period.
The Big Red moves to 15-4 on the year, while DePauw improves to 12-6-1. Denison, who are hoping to earn their 15th NCAA Tournament berth, will await word from the NCAA selection committee on Monday (Nov. 9). The selection show will air on ncaa.com at 1 p.m.
