Denison men fall to Xavier

Denison University logged four event wins on Saturday but that wouldn't be enough as Division I foe, Xavier handed the Big Red a 158-104 loss from the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio.

Denison's victories came from Ben Burdick in the 1,650 freestyle; Jack Lindell in the 200 backstroke; Stuart Hohm in the 500 free; and Max Howes in the 200 free.  In what was his first 1,650 of the season, Burdick logged a winning time of 16:41.20.  First-year Jackson Berman followed in fourth place in 17:00.66.

In the 200 free, Howes hit the wall in 1:43.40 while Hohm checked in second in 1:44.49.  Hohm would return later to win the 500 free in 4:44.90 as the Big Red held down the top three spots in the event. Second went to Matt Hedman in 4:49.02 while Burdick took third in 4:51.51.

Lindell's win in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.64 marked a season-best time in the event for the junior.  It also marked nearly a two-second drop over his time last night at Ohio State.

While the Denison swimmers were busy taking on the Musketeers, the divers hosted Albion in an exhibition competition.  That's where the biggest news of the day occurred as defending Division III national champion, Max Levy broke Connor Dignan's 6-dive school record on the 3-meter board with a score of 375.30.  Levy's first dive, a back 2 ½ somersault tuck with a 2.8 degree of difficulty landed him 67.20 points.  He would follow with dive scores of 58.13, 65.10, 65.25, 60.90 and 58.73.

On the 1-meter board, Ben Lewis took first with a score of 351.38.  Levy checked in second at 315.38.

Back in the pool, Andrew Rich would place second in the 200 fly (1:58.40) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:02.97).  Conrad Wuorinen was the runner-up in the 100 free in 47.85.  He also took third in the 50 free in 21.51 seconds.

Jason Wesseling posted a third-place swim in the 100 breast (52.93) and Ryan Stevenson took third in the 200 breaststroke after posting a time of 2:13.41.  Liam Marsden-Readford rounded out the top finishers for DU as he took third in the 100 butterfly in 52.53 seconds.

Denison would finish second in both relays.  In the 200 medley relay, Alec Carlson, Brendan Howley, Rich and Howes finished in 1:35.38, just .16 behind the winning time by Xavier.  To close out the meet, Wuorinen, Howes, Hohm and Kenny Fox combined for a time of 3:10.55.

The Big Red will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 14 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for their annual dual meet against Kenyon College.
