Wozniak's goal pushes Big Red past Ladies, into NCAC title match

Box Score

Denison sophomore Meg Wozniak's goal in the 38th minute of play lifted the 21st-ranked Big Red to a 1-0 victory over Kenyon on Wednesday night in the semifinal round of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament from Granville.

With the win, DU secured its eighth appearance in the NCAC Tournament Championship game that will take place on Saturday against top-seeded DePauw, who defeated Wittenberg, 2-1, in double overtime. Saturday's game will be a rematch of the 2012 NCAC Tournament final that saw the Tigers defeat the Big Red, 1-0, in Granville.

Through the first 35 minute of play, the Big Red held a slim 3-2 edge in shots which included a one-on-one opportunity for senior Andrea Witte in the 17th minute that went just over the crossbar. The scoreless tie was broken shortly after a foul by Kenyon on sophomore defender Allison Vilsack. Set up in front of the Ladies' bench, sophomore Drew Wentzel floated a free kick towards the back post that was buried into the net by Wozniak at 37:16. The sophomore's header goal marked her sixth tally of the season and gave Denison a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

The Big Red had a couple opportunities to add to their lead in the second half. In the 74th minute, Wozniak nearly netted her second of the game when she uncorked a deep shot that required a leaping one-handed save by Alissa Poolpol. With six minutes left in regulation, freshman Maggie Armstrong slipped a through ball to Jacquie Graham who got by her defender and was one-on-one with Poolpol. The senior goalie made a nice diving play to break up the threat before Heather Pacheco cleared away the loose ball.

Denison outshot Kenyon 13-6, including an 8-0 advantage over the final 24 minutes of the match. The Big Red also attempted six of the game's seven corners and committed 11 fouls compared to just four infractions by the Ladies. The two teams also combined for five offsides.

The goal scorer Wozniak, Ashlyn Flaherty, Witte and Madison Smith all logged two shots to pace the Denison attack. Sophomore keeper Jenny Herold needed just two saves to pick up her ninth shutout of the season.

Six different players recorded a shot for the Ladies with Campbell Fee and Meredith Rogers registering the only two shots on frame. Poolpol made six stops and allowed one goal in the final collegiate match.

Denison moves to 15-3 on the year, while Kenyon ends its season with an 11-7-1 record. The Big Red will return to the pitch on Saturday when they vie for the NCAC Tournament Championship against top-seeded DePauw. Kickoff from Greencastle, Ind. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
