Times for the Denison women's swimmers continue to drop quicker than the temperature in central Ohio and all of that fast swimming led to a one point win over rival Kenyon College this Saturday in Gambier. The Big Red posted 11 wins while recording season-best times in numerous events. More importantly, nine NCAA 'B' cut times were improved upon in the 150.5-149.5 win.
Denison was led by senior Ashley Yearwood who logged four victories in the 100 backstroke (57.98), the 100 freestyle (52.23) and the 200 medley and 200 free relays. In the 200 medley relay, along with Carolyn Kane, Marissa Bednarek and Mary Van Leuven, the team touched in a season-best 'B' cut time of 1:44.90. Another season-best 'B" time was logged by Kate Wright, Yearwood, Kane and Van Leuven in the 200 free relay when they hit the wall in 1:34.41.
Bednarek, last week's North Coast Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week, lowered her NCAA provisional qualifying times with wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.10) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.39). Campbell Costley dropped two 'B' cuts in the 200 free (1:52.00) and the 500 free (4:59.89) and Kane won the 50 free with a time of 23.72. Costley's time in the 500 free, Kane's in the 50 free and Bednarek's breaststroke times are the fastest times recorded by a Division III swimmer to this point in the season.
Halli Garza would notch a season-best swim in the 400 IM with her time of 4:33.30. She also won the 200 fly in 2:04.22. Taylor Johns was the runner-up in the 1,000 free in 10:19.45 while Van Leuven finished second to Kane with a 'B' cut time of 23.97 in the 50 free.
In diving, Eva Vivero won the 3-meter with a score of 213.75 and finished second on the 1-meter board with 206.85.
This marks the sixth win over Kenyon in Denison's last seven meetings. The Big Red will return to the pool on Dec. 3 when they take part in the three-day Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
* The final score of this meet was corrected on Nov. 17 to reflect an incorrectly entered diving score.
