Box Score Makenzie Best's goal in the 107th minute lifted Case Western Reserve to a 1-0 double overtime victory over eighth-ranked Denison on Tuesday night in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Big Red dominated the shot category 21-6, but a late turnover in the second overtime period ended up being the difference maker as Best cashed in on a 1-v-1 with Denison goalie Jenny Herold at 106:20.
Of their 21 attempts, the Big Red landed six on frame. Sophomore Meg Wozniak nearly buried a header in the 36th minute, but the Case Western defense bailed out its goalie with a save on the goal line. Denison held a 15-4 advantage in shots at the end of regulation and took six of the eight shots in overtime. In the second OT, the Big Red unloaded three shots in a 35 second span but couldn't come up with the game-winning goal.
Wozniak and junior Naomi Barker had four shots each, while Ashlyn Flaherty and Allison Vilsack registered three attempts apiece. Herold finished with one save.
The goal scorer, Best, logged four of the Spartans' six shots, while Megan Romelfanger finished with five saves in the win.
With the loss, Denison's regular season winning streak, which dates back to last season, comes to an end at 15 games. The Big Red is now 10-1 on the season, while Case Western Reserve improves to 7-2-2. DU resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Oct. 10) when they travel to Allegheny for a 12 p.m. match.
