DU blanks Oberlin; clinches postseason home match

Box Score

The Big Red women's soccer team locked up the second seed in the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament following a 2-0 victory at Oberlin on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Denison clinched home field in the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament set to begin next Wednesday.

The match was scoreless at the intermission even though the Big Red held an 8-0 advantage in the shot category. Denison finally broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute when junior Anne Denz buried a header off a long pass towards the back post from senior Logan Berlet. The goal was Denz's sixth of the season.

Just five minutes and four seconds later, Denison doubled their lead off a Berlet corner kick. The senior captain sent in a crossing pass that found the head of freshman Maggie Armstrong at 56:46. For Armstrong, it marked her seventh goal of the season, while Berlet posted her first-career multiple-assist outing.

DU dominated the Yeowomen in shots, 21-4, and attempted all 12 corner kicks in the match. The aggressive Big Red offense was flagged for 10 offsides, while the two teams combined for just seven fouls.

Senior Andrea Witte led Denison with five shots, while the two goal scorers, Armstrong and Denz, combined for three attempts. Berlet's two assists moved her in a tie for the team lead with four helpers on the season. Sophomore goalie Jenny Herold logged her eighth shutout of the season after making one stop.

Gwennie Gardiner had two of Oberlin's four shots and the lone shot on goal for the Yeowomen. Goalie Jordyn Morris had four saves in 90 minutes of action.

With the win, Denison improves to 14-3 overall and finishes with a 6-2 conference record. Oberlin ends the season at 7-7-3 and 2-4-2 in NCAC play. As the second seed, the Big Red will host third-seeded Kenyon in the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
