No. 8 DU earns 10th win against Hiram

Box Score

The eighth-ranked Big Red women's soccer team erupted for six goals for the second time this season as they rolled to a 6-2 win over Hiram on a rainy day at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

Denison took an early 1-0 lead after successfully converting their first penalty kick opportunity of the season. After freshman Maggie Armstrong drew a foul in the box, junior Ashlyn Flaherty was called upon to attempt the PK. Flaherty ripped a shot past the goalie to put DU on top at 7:57.

The Terriers tied things up with the next shot of the match when Kaitlin Zemanski scored her first goal of the season off a Katelyn Mauch assist. Zemanski's goal came at 13:08. The match was only tied for six minutes as senior defender Logan Berlet buried a shot into the upper left corner from 35 yards out off a pass from freshman Sam Haseltine. The unassisted goal was her third of the season.

The Big Red added to their lead in the 34th minute when junior Anne Denz netted her second goal of the year. Denz took a through ball from Meg Wozniak and chipped a shot over the charging keeper and into the wide open net. The goal was Denz's second in as many games. Flaherty provided the final tally of the opening half when she placed a shot into the upper left 90. The goal marked her second of the game and fourth on the season.

DU quickly made it a 6-1 contest after scoring two second-half goals 87 seconds apart. Denz increased the lead to 5-1 after settling a failed clear and depositing the ball into the upper right corner at 63:04. One minute and 27 seconds later, junior Jacquie Graham joined Armstrong as the team's co-leader in goals with her sixth of the season. Graham worked her way through the Terrier defense and ripped a shot off the Hiram keeper and into the net.

Hiram's leading goal scorer Allie Glatt picked up her ninth goal of the season in the 78th minute, but DU's offensive onslaught was too much for the Terriers to overcome. The Big Red finished with a 27-7 advantage in shots, including 16 of the 21 shots on frame. Denison took five of the six corner kicks, while Hiram was whistled for 12 infractions compared to the Big Red's eight.

Denison's two multiple goal scorers, Flaherty and Denz, finished with five and three shots, respectively, while Wozniak had a game-high six attempts and the lone assist of the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Herold made three stops en route to her 10th win of the season.

Glatt paced Hiram with three shots and a goal, while Zemanski's score came on her only shot of the match. Starting keeper Kailie Reed took the loss after allowing four goals and making four saves in the first half. Goalie Alina Mille surrendered two goals and made four saves in the second period.

With the win, the Big Red moves to 10-0 on the year and a 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Hiram falls to 3-8 and 0-2 in league action. Denison will take a break from NCAC play on Tuesday (Oct. 6) when they travel to regionally-ranked Case Western Reserve. Kickoff from Cleveland is slated for 7:30 p.m.
