Box Score The Denison women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback at North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wittenberg on a rainy Tuesday evening in Springfield, Ohio.
The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the 31st minute when Michelle Brunswick scored off an assist from Julia Smith. The Big Red went on to outshoot the home team 6-3 in the opening period, but entered the intermission down by a goal.
The deficit for Denison doubled in the 49th minute when Megan Davis notched an unassisted tally on the first shot of the second have, giving Wittenberg a 2-0 lead with roughly 41 minutes left in regulation. Just 42 seconds after making her first appearance in the match, sophomore Grace Murray cut the margin in half with her second goal of the season. Murray's tally came off an assist from freshman Maggie Armstrong in the 60th minute of play.
Over the final 30 minutes of action, the Big Red held a 5-3 edge in shots which included four-straight attempts inside the final 12 minutes. Unfortunately, DU couldn't slip either of their two shots on goal behind Tiger goalie Maggie Grieser.
The Big Red outshot Wittenberg 13-8, but the Tigers held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots on frame. The two teams combined for three corner kicks, eight fouls and five offsides calls.
Senior Logan Berlet and sophomore Allison Vilsack each registered two shots, while the other nine attempts were scattered among nine different players. Sophomore goalie Jenny Herold made four saves in the losing effort.
Eight different players logged a shot for Wittenberg, including goal scorers Davis and Brunswick. Grieser had five stops in the victory.
Denison falls to 13-3 on the season and 5-2 in NCAC play, while Wittenberg improves to 9-5-2 and 4-2-1 in league action. The Big Red closes out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 31) when they travel to Oberlin for a 2 p.m. match.
