Box Score Jacquie Graham scored twice in the second half and Keara Kilbane notched three points as the Big Red women's soccer team handed DePauw its first loss in North Coast Athletic Conference play, 3-1, on Senior Day in Granville.
Denison needed just two shots and 2:53 to grab the early advantage over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon. After having her first attempt corralled by DePauw keeper Riley Riordan, Kilbane capitalized on her second shot of the match. Fellow senior Logan Berlet got the play started with her corner kick from the far side of the field. The Tigers attempted to clear the ball out of danger, but the header fell right to Kilbane whose shot through traffic went under the right leg of Graham and into the lower right corner. The goal was her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
It remained a one-goal game until the 43rd minute when Kathryn Ruark made a run down the right side and chipped a shot into the back of the net. Ruark's third goal of the season tied the match right before the teams entered the locker room.
The Big Red once again showed their quick-strike ability in the opening stages of the second half. Kilbane settled another failed clear by the Tigers off a Berlet corner and unloaded another shot towards the goal. Unlike the Denison's first-half goal, this one was redirected by Graham on the door step at 48:43. The junior added a key insurance goal in the 61st minute when she beat the goalie 1-on-1 from 10 yards out. Graham's team-leading eighth goal of the year gave DU a 3-1 lead.
DePauw nearly shrunk the deficit with seven minutes left in regulation when she found herself 1-on-1 with Denison goalie Jenny Herold. However, the aggressive Herold sprinted off her line to make a sliding play on Ruark before she could get a shot off.
The Tigers held a slight 10-8 advantage in shots, while the Big Red had the 6-4 edge in shots on frame. Denison also committed seven fouls to DePauw's three and attempted seven of the game's 13 corner kicks.
Graham's two goals came on her only two shots of the match, while Kilbane finished with two attempts, one goal and one assist. Herold made three stops en route to her 13th victory of the season.
Elizabeth Seewer, Alyson Marzonie and the goal scorer, Ruark, all had two shots for the Tigers. Riordan finished the match with three saves.
With the win, Denison improves to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC, while the loss drops DePauw to 9-6-1 and 6-1 in league play. The Big Red will close the regular season on the road beginning with a trip to Wittenberg on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTABLE: Prior to the game Denison honored its three senior members, Logan Berlet, Keara Kilbane and Andrea Witte. This senior class has helped the Big Red post 41 wins and reach the NCAC Tournament each last three seasons, including a berth in the NCAC Championship game in 2012.
