Box Score Spencer Williams and Alex Lalonde each scored 22 points to help lift 14th-ranked Wooster to a 95-72 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.
Despite falling in an early eight-point hole, the Big Red battled to shrink the deficit to two behind 3-pointers from juniors Darius White and Bret Woolard. Woolard also knocked down a jumper off a pass from Max Siwik during the stretch.
Behind 12-10, the Fighting Scots 19 of the next 29 points to take their first double-digit lead of the day. Once again, the resilient Big Red squad pulled within four thanks to six-straight points by Woolard. Wooster answered with a 10-2 burst that opened up a 41-29 lead. The Scots run featured a pair of Xavier Brown threes and a fast-break dunk by Dan Fanelly. Trailing by 10 with less than a minute to play, junior Patrick Keller knocked down a trey to close the gap to seven. However, Lalonde responded on the ensuing possession with a triple of his own to give Wooster a 46-36 lead at the half.
Denison came within seven points of the Fighting Scots twice in the early stages of the second half. The Scots would use the three ball to regain a 13-point lead, and maintain its double-digit advantage with strong play both down low and on the perimeter. Wooster methodically expanded on its 63-52 lead over the course of six minutes, resulting in a 20-point lead with just over four minutes to play. That surge was pivotal in the Scots' 23-point win.
Wooster finished 33-for-68 (58 percent) from the field, which included a 63-percent conversion rate in the second period. The Fighting Scots also hit 14-for-29 (48 percent) from three-point range. Wooster outscored the Big Red in the paint 44-32 and committed just nine turnovers.
DU shot 42 percent (27-for-64) from the floor but went just 5-for-20 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Denison held a 39-31 advantage on the glass. Sophomore point guard David Meurer led the Big Red with 16 points and two steals, while Woolard chipped in 15 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Senior Briggs King added 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Brad Woolard also grabbed eight boards to go with five assists and six points.
In addition to his 22 points, Williams also dished out six assists, while Lalonde recorded five blocks. Milt Davis went 5-for-6 from the field en route to scoring 12 points off the bench. Davis' two three on the day both game within the final five and half minutes. Josh Kipfer also chipped in 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Fanelly's eight assists, two blocks and two steals complimented his eight points.
Wooster improves to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Big Red falls to 8-4 and 2-3 in league play. Denison returns to action next Saturday (Jan. 10) when they host Wabash College. Tip-off from Livingston Gymnasium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
