Denison rolls past Tartans

The Big Red women's swimming and diving team captured 11 event titles en route to a 170-104 victory at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Denison was led by three-time winners Marissa Bednarek and Ashley Yearwood. The duo kicked off the day as half of the victorious 200 medley relay team along with Carolyn Kane and Mary Van Leuven. The foursome touched in with a time of 1:47.42, besting the second-place team from CMU by almost three seconds.

Bednarek continued her successful night with a clean sweep in the breaststroke events. The junior won the 100 with a time of 1:07.22, while her mark of 2:55.99 was good enough to claim the 200 breast title. Yearwood's two individual victories came in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She touched the wall with a time of 24.10 in the 50 and 51.93 in the 100.

Sophomore Campbell Costley was the other multiple winner for DU on Saturday. Costley's first win came in the 200-yard freestyle where she posted a time of 1:53.39, out touching teammate Carolyn Kane by 61 hundredths of a second. The sophomore also won the 500 free with a time of 5:02.01.

The Big Red's four other wins came from senior Molly Willingham, juniors Krysta Garbarino and Taylor Johns, and freshman Halli Garza. Willingham won the 200 back with a time of 2:09.52, finishing 19 hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Libby Dalziel. Garbarino and Garza helped Denison win both butterfly events. Garbarino was victorious in the 100 with a mark of 58.11, while Garza led a quartet of DU swimmers in the 200. Garza set the pace with a final time of 2:07.93, followed by Garbarino (2:08.55), freshman Steph Munoz (2:11.56) and senior Michelle Howell (2:12.09). Johns' win came in the 400 IM where she finished in front of Garza and Howell with a time of 4:34.86.

In diving exhibition, sophomores Sarah Lopez and Katherine Hennigan each paced the Big Red on different boards. Hennigan's score of 285.95 in the 3-meter event was the highest total of the day, while Lopez led DU on the 1-meter board with a six-dive score of 282.60.

Denison closes out its dual meet schedule next Saturday when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan at 10 a.m.
