Box Score

Seventh-ranked Heidelberg pounded out 14 hits en route to a 14-5 victory over Denison on Tuesday afternoon from Peaceful Valley in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Berg struck first with three runs on a pair of base hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Big Red cut into the deficit in the top of the second when junior Georgie Montes scored on a double play ball.

With one out in the third, senior designated hitter Andrew Touhy roped a double down the right field line that scored Tucker Davison.  Junior Ryan Mulligan followed with a base hit up the middle that drove in Charlie Apfelbach, and Touhy, giving Denison its first lead of the game.

The lead was short lived as Heidelberg pushed across a run in the bottom of the third to tie the contest at 4-4.  Trevor Oldham knocked in TJ Harkness with a single through the right side.  The home team regained its lead with three runs in the fourth.  Alex Grove drew a bases-loaded walk, while Harkness plated a run with an infield single.  The final run came on a fielder's choice out to third.

Denison pushed a run across in the fifth thanks to a fielding error at second, but Heidelberg answered with four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to lock up the win.

Touhy finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, while Mulligan drove in a pair. Apfelbach, Montes and Davison scored the other three runs for DU. Reliever JT Trimble (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings pitched. Charlie Binford turned in one of his best performances of the season, scattering three hits and allowing an unearned run in three innings.

For Heidelberg, Harkness went 5-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Fleming and Grove each drove in three. Adam Manner picked up his sixth win of the season. Over the course of seven innings, Manner allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

With the loss, Denison falls to 15-13, while the Student Princes improve to 28-5.  The Big Red returns home on Wednesday for their final two North Coast Athletic Conference West Division games of the season.  DU will host a doubleheader with DePauw beginning at 4 p.m.
