Box Score La Roche College racked up 17 hits and pushed across 15 runs in a shutout victory over the Denison baseball team on Wednesday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.
The high-powered Redhawk offense got to work early as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first off of Big Red starter Ian Walsh. Walsh overcame the early adversary to hang back-to-back zeroes in the second and third innings. However, La Roche chased the DU sophomore from the game on their way to a four-run fourth. The Redhawks added three more runs in the fifth to build a 9-0 advantage.
La Roche locked up the win in the final two frames with two in the eighth and four more in the final inning. Colin Fiekles and Franzee Barlamas led the RedHawk offense with three hits, two RBIs and two run a piece, while Cory Podvasnik drove in three on the strength of two hits. Brian Tougher and Sean Lubin each had two hits, two RBIs and a run, while Colin Williamson crossed the dish twice.
Denison senior Andrew Touhy recorded two of the Big Red's four hits, while freshmen Alex Enrique and Tucker Davison each had a single.
Walt Hadjuk (5-2) picked up the win after toss six innings of three-hit ball. Jesse Bauer surrendered one hit and struck out three in two innings of work, while Ryan Fennell retired the side in order in the ninth. Walsh (0-2) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on two hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Denison falls to 12-11, while La Roche moves to 19-11 on the year. The Big Red resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday when they travel to Crawfordsville, Ind. for a key division series with the Little Giants. Game one of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
