In the opening game of the doubleheader, senior Kelsey Hager fired a three-hit shutout to earn her second victory of the season. Hager did not allow an extra base hit while striking out two and walking only two.
Denison scored two runs in the second inning that was set up after Gretchen Staubach led off the inning by reaching on an error by the Defiance shortstop. With one out, first-year second baseman Ryan Lee would notch Denison's fourth-straight hit of the inning, moving Laughlin to second. Ellen McDevitt-Stredney followed with an infield single, loading the bases for Julie Rooney would proceed to reach on a fielder's choice that scored Laughlin.
Denison left the bases loaded in the second, but they would answer in the third when Staubach smashed her fourth home run of the season over the wall in left-center, scoring Meghan Edwards who led off the inning with a single.
Laughlin and Lindsey Kenyon led Denison at the plate in game one, going 2-for-4.
