OWU and DU split Saturday's DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

A 7-3 win by Denison in game two of Saturday's doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan forced a split with the Battling Bishops.  OWU prevailed 6-2 in extra-innings in the opener of the four-game series.

Due to game one going into extra-innings, per North Coast Athletic Conference rules, game two of the twinbill became a 7-inning game.  Errors would plague Ohio Wesleyan in the nightcap and it started early as two Bishop miscues in the bottom of the first would allow three runs to score.

Charlie Apfelbach started things off with an infield single to shortstop.  He would then advance to second after a throwing error.  Ryan Mulligan would lay down a bunt base hit, moving Apfelbach to third, setting up Duncan Moran's sacrifice fly to left.

An Andrew Touhy single moved Mulligan to second.  A double steal by Touhy and Mulligan forced the Bishops' catcher to throw the ball down the line at third, allowing Mulligan to score and Touhy to move to third.  With only one out, Ryan Loehnert dropped a sacrifice bunt that plated Touhy with the third run of the inning.

DU would tack on one more in the second when two more errors would allow Nick Marsit to score.  OWU countered with a two-run fourth inning that would be matched by the Big Red in the bottom of the fourth.  Denison did not manage a hit in their half of the inning, but thanks to three Bishops errors, Loehnert and Alex Enrique would score.

After an Ohio Wesleyan run in the fifth, DU would tack on its seventh and final run thanks to Marsit's RBI double which scored Georgie Montes.

Ian Barry got the start for Denison and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs off just four hits.  Connor Hanrahan entered the contest with a three-run lead in the fifth inning and closed out the game for his first career save.  Hanrahan scattered three hits and one walk while striking out two in 2.2 innings.

Ohio Wesleyan starter Peter Munger dropped to 1-5 on the season.  All seven of Munger's runs allowed were unearned due to the Bishops' eight errors in the contest.

Mulligan posted DU's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one run scored.

In game one, the two teams went to extra-innings tied, 2-2.  With starting pitcher Connor Murphy still on the mound, he got Tyler Flaherty to ground out to open the inning.  Aaron Caputo followed with an infield single, and J.J. Buckey walked.  After an error allowed Caputo to score from second, OWU found themselves leading 3-2 with Buckey on third.  Phitter Dalton Martz would put the next offering from Murphy in play and that's when defensive replacement, Joe LaPlaca's throw to the plate was off the mark, allowing a second run to cross.

Hanrahan would take the hill for Denison, and an RBI single by Justin Dages followed by an RBI ground out by Aaron Strausbaugh gave the Battling Bishops a comfortable advantage heading to Denison's final at-bat.

In the home half of the eighth, OWU starter Greg Hock would retire the side in order to lock up his first win of the season. Hock gave up only three hits in eight innings.  He walked only two and both runs were earned.

Two of Denison's three hits in game one came from Duncan Moran.  It was his RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning that forced the game into extra-innings.

Dages led OWU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run scored.

Denison and OWU will meet again on Sunday in a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. in Granville.
