Denison rallies to beat Capital

Box Score

Denison battled back from an early 5-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, resulting in a 7-5 victory over Capital from Big Red Field.

With the game tied, 5-5, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Andrew Touhy led off with a single up the middle.  Alex Enrique was called upon to pinch run and he promptly stole second.  Ryan Loehnert would follow with a ground out to second, advancing Enrique to third.

Duncan Moran was due up next and the sophomore was already 1-for-3 after a base hit in the fourth inning.  Moran would come through by doubling over the head of centerfielder Nate Campbell, scoring Enrique.

After a fielder's choice by Zac Lewinski cut down Jake Meegan, who was pinch running for Moran, at third base, Nick Marsit would drive in Lewinski with a base hit to left.

The 7-5 lead would be enough as Denison kept JT Trimble on the hill to work a scoreless eighth.  In the ninth, Ryan Mulligan moved from shortstop to the mound.  After retiring Captial's lead-off hitter, Kirby Boehm delivered a single to right, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with one out and a stiff wind blowing out to dead-center.  Mulligan responded by forcing Brian Wyer to fly out, and Campbell to ground out to second, ending the game.

Trimble got the victory in 1.1 innings of relief to improve to 1-0.  Mulligan picked up his second save of the season by pitching the scoreless ninth.

Connor Hanrahan pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Matthew Zmuda logged two-thirds of an inning, allowing one walk and no runs.  Denison starter, Royce Park, pitched an inning and two thirds.  One of his three runs allowed was earned.  He walked four and struck out one while giving up one hit.  Charlie Binford relieved him and pitched 2.2 innings, scattering four hits while allowing two earned runs.

Moran, Lewinski, and Touhy each went 2-for-4 to lead Denison.  Georgie Montes, Mulligan, and Marsit all contributed RBI hits.

Capital was led by Campbell who was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two walks.  Crusader starter Michael Davis pitched 5.2 innings and was not involved in the decision.  The loss was tagged to reliever Jeff Small who pitched the pivotal seventh inning during the DU comeback.  He gave up three hits and two earned runs his inning of work.

The win moves Denison's record to 9-9 while Capital falls to 11-12.  DU will return to North Coast Athletic Conference divisional play this weekend when they host Ohio Wesleyan in a four-game series beginning on Saturday (April 12) at 12 p.m.
